In Remembrance of Robert Lester Gossage

Robert Lester Gossage passed away early morning in his sleep on August 25, 2022. He was 89 years young, living in Mesa, Arizona.

Robert is survived by his wife Gloria (Best) of Ottumwa, Iowa; daughters Debra and Laurie “George” (Charles), sons Jay (Ann) and Michael (Sheri); grandchildren Shane G, Brandy, Shane C, Joshua G, Amber, Joshua B, Devin, Wade, Colton and Breanna; Great grandchildren Ariana, Shaun, Elena, Ruby Erica, Carden, Rhealee, Hayden, Jon, Jayson, Samuel, Alexis, Jadin, Haily, Treeva and Layla; his brother Dean and sister Penny. Robert was preceded in death by his brothers Dale and Donald; and his son-in-law Jules “Buddy”.

He was born on June 24, 1933, son of the late Vernon and Polly Gossage. Robert along with his siblings and his parents, lived in Ottumwa in a full, loving, family filled upbringing through his entire childhood.

Robert graduated from Washington High School as a local track star, his record was not broken until years later. Even though he and Gloria were in the Glee Club together, they didn’t start dating until they graduated. He joined the Army on August 27, 1953 and married the love of his life on June 14, 1954. Robert served his country during the Korean War and was very proud to be a veteran, anyone that knew him heard him say at one time or another that he served 1 year, 9 months and 25 days! After being honorably discharged he worked various jobs until he started working with Sears and Roebuck. He was transferred to Kansas City, Kansas where he and Gloria raised their young family. He worked at Sears for about 10 years culminating as the manager of the automotive department. He then went to work with Phillips Petroleum Corporation until the plant there in Kanas City closed in 1977. He was given the opportunity to transfer to Odessa, Texas which he accepted. In 1994 he and Gloria made the decision to purchase a fifth wheeler, retire, put the house up for sale and start their much-anticipated travels. They would upgrade their RV from time to time over the years as they traveled. They enjoyed their nomadic way of living for over 21 years settling in Mesa, Arizona in 2015.

He filled his life to the brim with knowledge, experience, and activities. He and Gloria were married for over 68 years, a special element in their lives was traveling to visit their family and friends spread out around the country, seeing new sights and historic spots. They enjoyed the many wonderful memories they made during the times they spent in Mexico, Australia and the Virgin Islands. Robert loved spending time with his family and friends and was always ready to help them with their projects. You could also always count on him to partake in a beer or a 7 & 7 with you. He was an avid sports fan especially Indy and NASCAR races. He will be greatly missed by his family and the many lives he touched.

A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery, Mesa, Arizona on 28 October 2022 at 10:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a tribute donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.act.alz.org).
