Carmela C. Di Bonito, 91, passed away on November 1, 2022. Carmela was born to Maria Guitto Casillo and Francesco Casillo on July 9, 1931, in Pozzuoli Italy. At the age of 6, during WWII, she began sewing to help support her large family. She went on to a trade school in Italy to perfect her craft. Her clothing designs, coupled with her innovative marketing, gave her the recognition of a local celebrity in Pozzuoli. In October of 1960, she married Antonio Di Bonito. In 1962, at the age of 31, she and her husband along with their eldest son immigrated to the United States and lived in Utah for many years before coming to Arizona. In Utah, she worked as a head tailor for fine clothing retailers such as ZCMI, Block’s and Mr. Mac’s. She was an amazing cook with enormous Italian pride and a deep love for family and friends. Everyone around her felt at home. She was truly an angel that walked among us. She was preceded in death by her son, Frank and her children’s father, Antonio Di Bonito. She is survived by her grandchildren, her son Gino (Louise), her daughter Anna and her daughter Laura (Douglas). To honor her legacy of giving selflessly to those in need, we ask that donations be made to St. Joseph’s Foundation at https://www.supportstjosephs.org/donate. Please designate donations to Area of Greatest Need St. Joseph Hospital in tribute to Carmela Di Bonito.
