It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carmen J. Carbone, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this life peacefully on August 27, 2026, in the comforting presence of his three children and their spouses. Born on January 24, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Carmen was the cherished son of Sylvester and Rose Carbone. He lived a life full of love, laughter, and the Catholic Faith. Carmen was a devoted husband to Mary, whom he affectionately referred to as “the girl next door.” Their love story began in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where they wed in a beautiful ceremony in February of 1957. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home in South Holland, Illinois, where they raised their three children, Carmene (Beth), James (Kelly), and Desiree (Shawn).
In 1977, Carmen and Mary relocated their family to Mesa, Arizona, where he continued to comfort those around him with his kindness and wisdom. Carmen’s career was marked by dedication and skill. He worked at the Nashua Tape Factory in Chicago before relocating to Arizona, where he joined the Tempe School District as a School Bus Mechanic and Supervisor. Carmen was known for his hardworking nature and his ability to solve any mechanical problem. His commitment to his work was surpassed only by his devotion to his family. A man of many talents, Carmen had an enduring love for music. He was a gifted musician, proficient in playing the guitar, mandolin, accordion, and Italian bagpipes. His melodies often filled his home, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness that his family cherished.
Carmen was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary, his parents, Sylvester and Rose Carbone, and his siblings, Sylvester Jr. and Carmella. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his three children, his siblings Angie, Shirley, and Jenny (John), his grandchildren Chris, Carl (Whitney), Steven (Kayla), Kim (Shane), Alyssia, Katie (Thomas), Maree (RJ), Ceci, Anthony, Sabrina, Selena, Shawn, and Ethan, and his great-grandchildren Kayleigh, Tristan, Kenzie, Astrid, Jay, Aurelius, Beau, Odette, Riggs, and Emilia. Carmen’s life was a testament to the power of love and family. Carmen was always there to lend a helping hand, whether it was with major projects or simply sharing a cup of coffee and conversation. His advice and stories were treasured by all who knew him, and his capacity to make everyone feel like family was truly remarkable.
The family will hold a private ceremony to honor Carmen’s memory. Carmen’s presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit and the love he shared will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
