Annie Edna Pauline Smith (McElhaney), lovingly known as Edna or Polly, passed away August 29, 2019 in her home in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 93 years young. Edna was born January 24, 1926 in Gore, Oklahoma to Charles and Della (Hamilton) McElhaney.
Edna was married December 16, 1944 in Tempe, Arizona to John (Bob) Robert Smith. Edna was a Nurse’s Aide, working at Gila General Hospital in Globe, Arizona before retiring from Motorola where she spent 15 years as a production technician in the Mesa plant.
Edna loved to go camping and fishing with her family and friends. She liked to sew and make dresses, garden, she was a good cook, and she would step in to help anyone in need. She frequently gave many household goods to the thrift store and to the church. She liked to travel to different states for family history, and visit many National Parks. She was the last surviving member of her 14 siblings and she loved her family dearly.
Edna is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Della; and her husband of 70 years, John.
She will live on in the hearts of her daughters, Kathy (Kevin – Las Vegas, NV), Karen (Phoenix, AZ), and Linda (David – Mesa, AZ); grandchildren, Christy, Sean, James, Ron, Ben, Dan, Stephanie, and Paulina; and 13 great grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, September 7, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 618 S Signal Butte Rd, Mesa, AZ 85207. A viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m. with a funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by an interment service at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, 7900 E Main St, Mesa, AZ 85207, where Edna will be laid to rest.
The family offers many thanks to the Relief Society and Priesthood members of the Crescent Ward, as well as to the Banner Home Care and Hospice workers.
