Clarice Maude Nelson Ryskamp was born on 22 February 1928 at Pleasant Grove, Utah to Helding Rosenquist Nelson and Maud Eliza Ash. She was proud of her Swedish and English LDS pioneer heritage, and talked often about her early life in, and later visits to, rural Pleasant Grove and Lindon. At age eight her family moved to Salt Lake City, living first on Lake Street and later at the corner of 700 East and Liberty Avenue. On that corner, she first met Rix Robinson Ryskamp when “he tried to run me over with his fancy new car.” He had come from Michigan to visit his sister Ann, but his enchantment with Clarice brought him back in February 1949 for her birthday and a month-long visit. Following their marriage in Salt Lake on 16 August 1949, the couple moved to Detroit. While Clarice often admitted she was not prepared for the change from her small-town Utah environment to urban life, her greatest accomplishments took place in suburban Oak Park, giving love and support to her “sweet man from Michigan” and raising their four children to be successful adults. Clarice is survived by her children and their spouses: George R. & Peggy of Lindon, UT; Becky Elizabeth & Steven Shiflett of Mesa, AZ; AprilKay & Mansel A. Nelson, of Flagstaff, AZ; and Barry N. & Robyn of Salt Lake City, UT; twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. All have loving memories of Grandma Ryskamp. She passed away peacefully in her daughter´s Mesa home on Thursday morning 1 February 2018, and will be buried with Rix in the Mountain View Cemetery, Mesa, AZ on 9 February 2018.
