Dale Stuart Sevier Obituary

Mr. Dale Stuart Sevier, died peacefully in Phoenix, AZ on Monday, June 15, 2015, at the age of 76. Dale is survived by his wife, Leah L. Sevier, (nee Larson), his three children, Jackie TenBensel (nee Sevier), her husband Mark TenBensel, Kelly Sevier, her partner Connie Mack, and Brian Sevier and his husband Kirk Webb. Dale and Leah have three grandchildren, Amanda, Rebecca and Dallas. He is survived by two siblings, Mr. John Sevier, his wife Sandy, and Mr. David Sevier and his wife Sue. His brother-in-law, Mr. Brian Larson and numerous and beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his older brother Robert Sevier as well as his parents Donald and Dorothy. Dale was born on March 13, 1939 in Burbank, California to Donald C. Sevier and Dorothy E. Sevier nee Chapman. He graduated from John Burroughs High School in 1957. Dale then enlisted in the United States Air Force. Once he completed basic training he was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. In the Air Force, Dale was the star pitcher for the base softball team. In 1958 he led the team to the World Championship in Okinawa, Japan. Dale met and fell in love with, Leah LaRene Sevier, nee Larson, who was also serving in the United States Air Force and stationed at Hickam. The couple were married in Hawaii July 8, 1960. Upon leaving the Air Force, later in 1960, the couple moved back to his hometown of Burbank, California where they welcomed their first child, Jackie. Dale began working for The Los Angeles Times in 1962 as a driver where he worked for the next 30 years. Over the next two years the couple welcomed two more children Kelly and Brian. His children remember him as a hardworking and humorous man who enjoyed telling a good joke. Dale and Leah moved to Mesa, AZ in 2002 to be near his mother-in-law and help in her care. Dale loved his grandchildren and was known as “papa.” He attended school concerts and plays, recording them on DVD. He proudly attended graduations, and took the kids on various trips. Dale was accomplished at multiple sports. He was a lifelong athlete who played softball, golf, and racquetball. He also enjoyed swimming, and working out. Golf became more of a passion throughout his life. Dale golfed as recently as his birthday in March, and he liked to brag that he had shot “under my age” that day. He was a witty individual who loved to be the focus of attention at family gatherings, especially if he was manning the barbeque grill. He taught himself how to play guitar as an adult, and enjoyed playing and singing for his family. He also enjoyed photography and reading. Dale was a Christian, who attended various churches throughout his life. Visitation will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home, 7900 E. Main Street, Mesa, on Friday, June 19, 2015 from 1:30 pm until the memorial service at 2:00 pm with Pastor Darwin Mecham officiating. Military honors will follow.
