Leland Bernard Mers, 72 passed away on April 14, 2015. Lee was born at home July 6, 1942 in Phoenix, AZ. His parents were Edith and Bernard Mers. His younger years were spent traveling with his mother. A fond memory was the summer of 1951 where he turned donuts working at the Summit House on the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Lee attended Thunderbird Adventist Academy where he met his wife Joyce before graduating in 1960. After high school he worked briefly as an apprentice electrician before joining the military. While in the Army, Lee was stationed at Fort Huachuca in Southern Arizona. Lee earned his Masters Degree in Counseling & Education in 1979 from Arizona State University (ASU). During his teaching career he was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity. Lee was a member of the Glendale Masonic Lodge #23 where he became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason. For 25 years Lee helped educate young minds in math and science at Isaac Junior High School. Once retired Lee enjoyed summers up at the cabin in the high country in Overgaard, AZ. He also continued his love for traveling. Over the years his travels led him through the Panama Canal, Bangkok, Thailand, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and various destinations across the US. He even got to sail the high seas on the first Around the World Cruise. Lee is survived by his wife of 52 years Joyce, his eldest son Brett, his youngest son Sean and his daughter in law Samantha.
