It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Joseph Spies, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully on February 20, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on January 3, 1941, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Don was the cherished son of Clarence and June Spies.

Don was born & raised in St. Paul Minnesota. Raised his family in Inver Grove Heights, MN.
After kids went away to college, moved to Woodbury, MN. Once he decided to retire, he and Sandy moved to their lake home in Turtle Lake WI. After 13 wonderful years at the lake, he and Sandy decided to move to Bismarck ND to be close to their son Chris, his wife Tracy and their grandchildren, Cole, Mason & Lydia.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sandy Spies, who stood by his side through all of life’s journeys. He was a proud father to his daughter, Pamela Spies-Schaible and husband David , and son, Christopher Spies and wife Tracy. His legacy continues through his four grandchildren, Cole Spies , Mason Spies, Lydia Spies, and Bryanna Schaible, who brought immense joy to his life.

Don is also survived by his loving siblings: Jeanne Goetzke, Bob Spies, Jackie Spies (John), Mary Spies, and Dick Spies (Cindy) as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins who all held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and June Spies , brother-in-law, Bob Goetzke, sister-in-law, Bonnie Spies, his niece, Deb Larson, his nephew, Al Faschingbauer and great nephew Kevin Goetzke.

A veteran of the United States Army, Don served his country with honor and pride, carrying the values of duty and dedication throughout his life. Don’s work background was a long career, retired from 3M corporation after 32 years. He was known for his warm spirit and unwavering support for his family and friends, always ready with a listening ear or a helping hand.

What meant most to him, was his faith, family & friendships. Don was a dedicated husband, dad and granddad, and his love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was a cherished brother, uncle and a steadfast friend to many, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. Don was known to be a great sports enthusiast, a total “Mr. fix-it”, and loved to travel.

As we remember Don, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and kindness. He will be deeply missed but will forever remain in our hearts. A memorial service will be held in vhis honor. Services will be Friday April 25th at Guardian Angels Catholic Church at 8260 4th St. N, Oakdale, MN. 55128. Mass is at 11 A.M. Visitation 1 hour before Mass. No burial after Mass. There will be a celebration of life immediately after the Mass, held at Oak Marsh Golf Course & Event Center, 526 Inwood Ave. N, Oakdale, MN, 55128 in the willow room. (651-730-8886). All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Don’s memory to a charity of your choice or the American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Association,American Cancer Society or St Jude’s. These organizations were ones that Don supported and believed in giving back to.
