David James Wahlers, also affectionately known as “Wally” was born on May 7th, 1957. He changed his address to a more heavenly one on the evening of March 21st, 2019. All those who followed the journey of his life the past 6 years know that Early On Set Alzheimer’s did not define the man!  He never let this disease determine who he was at his core. He faced this battle with bravery, joy, strong faith and conviction and humor. He knew that God had him in the palm of his hand no matter what! So we rejoice he is in Paradise with King Jesus.

He genuinely loved Jesus, his family and people. He touched hearts with his Spirit and people were drawn to him. He was a guy who was noticed, standing tall at 6’ 9!  Even with all the attention his height brought, he remained kind and humble. He served for years as a greeter & usher at church giving big hugs to everyone! He also traveled to both Fiji and Africa to plant seeds for the Kingdom through serving them.

He was a Devoted Husband, Father, Son, Brother and faithful friend that could have you rolling in laughter within minutes because of his dry, quick humored, one-liners.

He was born and raised in Iowa where he attended Valley High School in West Des Moines, graduating in 1975. His height, combined with his athleticism, earned him a spot on the Varsity Basketball team where he successfully played Center. He also loved golf and lettered in this sport.

He continued his basketball career on a full scholarship, playing Forward for the University of North Dakota for two years and then transferred over to University of Wisconsin LaCrosse where he was noted for his career achievement in 1978-79 as the rebound leader, ‘78 –‘79, tied for 3rd best in history of 5 blocked shots in a game, 14th best in history season rebounds, honorable mention MVP.  He loved nature and always wanted to be outside whether it was hunting, gardening or hanging out at the beach. He also continued his love for golf throughout his life. He consistently hit straight drives over 300+ yards and even had the infamous, “hole in one” in a tournament in Dallas, Texas.

In 1998 he and his family relocated to Gilbert, Arizona. He was fully devoted to Susie (the love of his life) and his girls.  He enjoyed spending time with them. His 29 year marriage to his wife was a beautiful picture of the gospel lived out.  “His Susie” was by his side as he breathed his last breath and he never forgot who she was. He would light up as she walked in the room. They knew true love.

He adored his daughter’s.  He valued spending time with them and encouraging them to dream. Their “secret” meeting place for Daddy Daughter dates was the local Dairy Queen. They also shared a love for the beach and every summer they all traveled to San Diego with the designated, family road trip song “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” blaring from the speakers as they sang along.

He is survived by his wife Susan Wahlers.  His Daughter’s Samantha (Adam) Rodriguez and Nicole Wahlers, Father Bill Wahlers, and Sister Diana Howes. Preceded in death by his Mother Jane Wahlers and Brother James Wahlers.

Services to be held on Thursday, April 4th, outdoors at 2354 N. Mesa Dr., Mesa, AZ 85201. The Memorial will be from 4-5 p.m. with a light dinner and personal sharing time afterwards to celebrate his entry into Paradise. Casual Hawaiian attire preferred.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the family for furthering his children’s education or Oakwood Creative Care located at 247 N. MacDonald, Mesa, AZ 85201.

  1. Bob Cox says:

As distant cousins our opportunity to meet was just this past September 2018. I’ll be forever grateful I met and knew my cousin, Dave. Clearly he was a fine man. Those of you who knew Dave much of his life, especially family all of it, are lucky, indeed. Dave will be missed. Bob Cox, Phoenix, AZ.

  2. Jim Cox says:

What a terrific guy he was! No wonder all his family and friends loved him so infinitely.

I can hear him now, singing out the chorus to “CIP” as his way of giving live one more time, during the memorial service.

  3. Paul Smith says:

I went to high school with Dave and have known him since about 9th grade. In recent years we reconnected via Facebook and the phone. It was very obvious to me his love of the Lord and I am confident I will see him again!

May God grant you family peace and hope in the TRUTH of the resurrection!
