Donald Bruce Harrop was born January 4, 1927, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Raised in Salt Lake, he graduated from Granite High School in 1945, and went immediately into the U.S. Army – assigned to post-war Italy. In the fall of 1946, he returned home, and on June 2, 1947 married his high school sweetheart – Phyllis Fortie. Following additional education at the University of Utah, Don embarked on a career in Marketing, and over the next 50 years worked for Dixie Cup, American Greetings, World Academy, and International Institute . . . to name a few.

Phyllis Fortie was born June 30, 1928 in the small farming community of Bonita, Utah. Her family moved into Salt Lake City when she was a child, and she graduated from Granite High School in 1946. On June 2, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart – Donald Bruce Harrop. Over the next 6 years, she bore 5 children, and was absolutely dedicated to their raising.

Career opportunities led them from Salt Lake to Los Angeles, to Seattle, to Cincinnati, and eventually to Tempe in 1966. During those years, Don and Phyllis were active with their family: Steven Don, Brian Cris, Bradley Phil, Becky, and Robert Dean, all of whom survive. They currently have 30 grandchildren and 84 great-grandchildren. They were active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in a number of callings in each place where they lived. They served a full time mission for the Church to Kirkland, Ohio in 2003-2004.

Phyllis and Don were never separated, and in the last few weeks of their lives, they lived together in a Beehive Care Center, each insisting that they needed to be there for the other. They were each tried in the furnace of mortality . . . enjoying success and disappointment, joy and heartbreak. And through it all, they did their best to hold fast to family and friends, to their integrity, and to the principals of character that mark a good person. Of them it may be said: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

Phyllis passed quietly on August 28th, 2013 and Don followed shortly thereafter on September 16, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 1007 S. 72nd St. in Mesa at 2pm followed by internment at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to honor Don and Phyllis Harrop are invited to make a donation in their name to either the Missionary Fund or the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
