Dorothy Isabelle (Gibbs) Updike was born on January 26, 1933, to John and Gladys Gibbs in Newcastle, Wyoming. She attended Clifton Country School and other country schools in Wyoming. Ice skating in the winter, and fishing and camping in the summer were her favorite activities while growing up. She was involved in 4-H Club for many years and became an excellent seamstress. In 1950 she graduated from Newcastle High School. After graduation she attended Denver Central Business College. On March 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to Robert Updike in the Methodist Church at Newcastle, Wyoming. To this union 4 sons were born: Dan, Tom, Mic and Ken. They lived in Newcastle, WY, where Bob worked for Updike Brothers, Inc. Dorothy devoted her time to caring for her family. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and spent many hours sewing for herself and others. In 1959 they moved to Moorcroft, WY. As the boys grew older, the family enjoyed camping and water skiing together. Dorothy also enjoyed attending the boys’ sporting events and rarely missed a game. They moved to Gillette, WY in 1977. Dorothy devoted several years to raising her granddaughter Robyn, who became like a daughter to her. It was during this time that Dorothy, always ready for a challenge, became a pilot. Bob also got his pilot’s license. They purchased a plane and began flying whenever they could, for business and pleasure. Dorothy continued to sew and delighted her grandchildren with new clothes “Made by Grandma”. In 1992 they moved to Arizona, where they enjoyed their new home in Mesa very much. Dorothy helped at the Los Palmas Clubhouse with bingo, and teaching crafts. Dorothy loved her Lord and church very much, and helped with church activities however she could. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 1, 2012 in Mesa, Arizona. Left to cherish her memories are sons: Dan and wife Cathie of Gillette, WY, Tom and wife Paulette of Riverton WY, Mic of Mesa, Az., and Ken and wife Katie of Oelrichs, SD: grandchildren: Laurie, Bryon, Robyn, Mia, Chris, Stacy, Jere, Larry, Jessie, Dawna, William, Kayla, Hannah, Joseph, and Ethan; twenty-two great grandchildren; niece Sharon Smith and nephew John Shuck, sister in law Mary Updike, brother –and sister in law, David (Bud) and Dorothy “Din” Updike, numerous cousins and many friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2010, her parents, her sister Jeanne Shuck, an infant brother, nephew Bob Shuck, and two grandsons. Dorothy has requested that memorials be made to: Summit Ministries, PO Box 207, Manitou Springs, CO 80829.
