Edward Wm. Appel of Mesa, AZ passed away April 23, 2011. Cause of death was respiratory arrest due to congestive heart failure. He was born June 11, 1932 to Stephen and Helen Appel. He grew up in Millville, MN – graduated from Plainview High School in 1950 – worked in the family business until 1951 – then joined the Navy to serve his country (during the Korean War) aboard the USS Antietam and USS Shangri La until 1955. He was Postmaster at Millville and Pine Island until his heart attack. He worked 15 years, part-time, at PSI (Pharmaceutical Specialties, Inc.), then retired and moved to Mesa, AZ with his wife, Nancy (married for 38 years). He is survived by his wife Nancy, 5 children – Patrick and Daniel of Minneapolis, MN, Steven of St. Louis, Vanessa Valle of McPherson, KS, Michelle Flumerfelt of White Rock, British Columbia; 3 step children – Wayne Wurst and Gwen Nolan of Austin, MN and Kevin Wurst of Cottage Grove, MN; brother Francis of Millville, sisters Ellen Stelling of Rochester, MN and Monica Brockway of Denver CO – many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Pitzer-Appel, both parents, sister, Grace Schad and nephew, Paul Appel. Edward was a member of Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, VFW in Rochester and Post 579 American Legion of Millville. Eddie loved sports, was a left handed baseball pitcher for the Millville team; an avid Vikings and Twins fan. He enjoyed camping, boating and pulling his children and grandchildren on water skis. He played golf and cards with enthusiasm and will be lovingly, lastingly and sadly missed. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on June 4, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ.
