Ethel May Weeks, a Christian woman, died peacefully on Thursday the 23rd of June at the Tatum Glen Group Home. Born on May 4, 1918, she had reached the age of 98 years old. Originally from Portageville, New York, Ethel Cummings married Donald Allen Weeks, spending over 50 years with him until his death in 1999. Their only child, Donald Gordon Weeks, a manager in telecommunications, also passed away in 2006. Ethel’s deep-seated spirituality was counterbalanced by her liveliness and sense of comedy. She delighted, for instance, in donning a hula skirt or a silly hat and making others laugh. She was a keen observer of nature, often pointing out the bickering antics of birds, the stately shape of a palm tree, or the dramatic lighting on a distant mountain. Ethel is survived by three grandchildren (Suporn, David, and Debra), six great-grandchildren (Chelsea, Cody, Kevin, Marissa, Michael, and Talon), and three great-great-grandchildren (Titus, Violet, and Ozias). Her gracious, welcoming personality caused her to have a great many friends, most of whom she tried to keep in touch with. In fact, three days before her passing she took a phone call from a childhood friend from Portageville, and the day that she passed she had a long-time friend at her side. She will be missed by a great many people. Ethel’s ashes will be laid to rest alongside her husband and son at the Portageville Cemetery. Friends and family are gathering for a remembrance potluck on July 16 in Arizona. If you would like to attend, please contact Suporn Greenberg at (480) 258-1064 for details.
