Irving Helge Helm, 87, of Peoria, AZ passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010 of natural causes. Irving was born on November 28, 1922 to Carl & Harriett Helm of Providence, Rhode Island. He attended schools in Rhode Island. He served in the United States Army (658th battalion) as an amphibious tank driver in the Pacific Theatres during the Second World War and was a decorated war veteran. After the war, he met and married Agnes Meredith in April, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. Around the same time, Irv, a passionate automobile enthusiast and mechanic operated and owned a Texaco gas station and “Helm’s Garage” where he specialized in engine rebuilds. The couple was blessed with two children, a son Chuck, and a daughter Susan. Irv then began his career in the unionized tool and dye industry and was elected Shop Steward. In the early 60’s he and Agnes opened “Irv’s Cocktail Lounge” in Detroit. In 1971 they moved west to Mesa, AZ. He is survived by a son, Chuck (Lori) Helm of Waddell, AZ, daughter, Susan (Michael) Faulkner, granddaughters Jennifer Faulkner and Melissa (Shawn) Schwab, all of Wenatchee, WA, and a grandson, Erik (Christa) Helm of Chandler as well as three great-grandchildren, Makenna and Conner Schwab and Kylie Helm. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Agnes, who passed away ten days before on October 20, 2010, his parents, and a brother, Fred Helm. Irv enjoyed visiting his many neighbors, and would go out of his way to always say “Hello” to people wherever he went. In addition, he lived for his sweet little “lap” dog, Tiger. Irv will be missed and the family is grateful to his many friends for the love and support they have provided. A visitation will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday November 3, 2010 with services following at 12:00 noon at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel 7900 E. Main St. Mesa, AZ 85207 (480) 832-2850 www.mvfuneralhome.com. Family suggests contributions be made in Irving’s name to American Legion Post #26 505 W. 2nd Ave. Mesa, AZ 85210 where he was a lifetime member.
