Joan F. Skinner 89 formerly of 1303 Stephens Dr. in Normal died Monday, December 13 in Mesa, AZ. There will be no funeral. Burial at Funks Grove Cemetery will be at a later date.
Joan was born January 11, 1921 in Normal, daughter of Deloss and Sina Belle Read Funk. She married Cushman Skinner May 17, 1947 at Prairie Home in Shirley. He passed away February 2, 1998. Survivors include daughter Charlotte Manning of Mesa AZ, son Gary (Marianne) Skinner, grandchildren Angela and Debbie Skinner of Normal, sister Eloise Stephen of Santa Rose CA, Frances Wooledge of Cincinnati OH, niece Ann Wasammann of Cincinnati OH, nephew David Wooledge of Erie PA and numerous cousins and friends.
Joan attended Ben Funk School Bloomington High School and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University class ’43. Member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and received her 65 year pen. Growing up in Prairie Home, her love of antiques started at an early age – she was a lifelong member of the Funk Family. She especially enjoyed the Funk Stubblefield reunions in the summer. Working on the family farm fields detasseling during summer vacation was a chore all the Funk girls enjoyed. Joan was a lifetime member of Jesse Fell Questers in Normal and enjoyed many trips antiquing with lifelong friends. Volunteering was a way of life for mom. She was always doing something for someone else trying to make their lives better. Many years were spent at Brokaw Thrift-shop , Glenn Grade School and numerous committees at church. A lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church she had her special pew over the years – she particularly enjoyed the bible study classes and the friendships over the years. Attending church camp at East Bay and Williams Bay were fond memories enjoyed by all the family. It was rumored that she started one of the first garage sales in the twin cities – even toward the end of her life garage sales were a big part of her life.
