Lawrence (Larry) Lee Bowers

Passed Away on March 1, 2015


Lawrence (Larry) Lee Bowers, 85, of Mesa AZ, joined his wife in heaven on Sunday, March 1.

Larry, son of Jake D. and Anna Frances (McGowen) Bowers was born on November 11, 1929. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, William and Cindy Bowers; daughter and son-in-law, Pattie and Chuck Baker; and daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Tom Meisterheim. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.

Larry was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School where he enjoyed playing football and was active in the Michigan State College 4H program. He attained a degree in Civil Engineering from MSU and then continued his studies doing graduate work at MIT. He served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War Conflict.

After his military service, Larry worked for several engineering companies and then began what was to become his life’s work in the Michigan County Roads system as an Engineer/Manager beginning in Branch County. After 7 years he accepted a similar position at the Otsego County Road Commission and moved his family to Gaylord MI. He remained in this position for 24 years. He was awarded the “Distinguished Service Award” in 1991 for his dedication and contributions to the County Road Association of Michigan. He was instrumental in moving the Road Commission into the digital age with his work on generating computer programs to assist in the handling of sign inventory and maintenance.

Outside of work he was always busy with his various projects and activities. He enjoyed many sports including boating, water and snow skiing, skeet shooting and archery. After his retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the country and were delighted to have visited all 50 states! His favorite past time was working on his various projects at home, such as photography, woodworking, gardening, making apple cider for friends and family and working around the farm.

He was a great father and was involved with the activities of his four children, both as a spectator and as a coach or leader. For many years he was a leader for the Boy Scouts of America. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed volunteering to assist there and throughout the community.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Jeanine (Merritt) after 63 wonderful years of marriage and his son, Frederick (Rick) Bowers.

A memorial service will be held in Michigan at a later date.
