Passed Away on December 31, 2013


Ramon “Ray” Hernandez, 90 of Apache Junction, AZ passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Ray was born November 27, 1923 in El Paso, TX to Crecencio and Josefa Hernandez. Ray loved life and enjoyed each precious day. He liked reading, keeping up with current events, staying in touch with family and friends and he loved to exercise, riding his power chair to the gym three days a week. Ray was a proud Air Force veteran of WWII. He owned The Door Shack in Phoenix, AZ and The Door Shack Construction Company in Albuquerque, NM. Even after retiring Ray shared his keen mind and business expertise by advising and consulting family and friends. His many friends, clients and business associates affectionately called Ray “Mr Door Shack.” Ray is survived by his wife Asunda “Sue” Hernandez, sister Martha Lerma of Chula Vista, CA, brother Raul (Maria) Hernandez of El Paso, TX, and sister Alicia (David) Dominguez of Merced, CA, his children Bertha (Richard) Roque of Austin, TX, Ray (Martha) Hernandez, Bobby (Lily) Hernandez, Irene (Joe) Salem all of El Paso, TX, Joe (Luann Chasteen) Hernandez of Phoenix, AZ, Martha Estella Hernandez of Phoenix, Aurora Lara of El Paso, and stepdaughter Michel (Jeff) Rendina of Mesa, AZ whose help over the many years is greatly appreciated. Ray has 19 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and many other wonderful family and friends. The family wishes to thank all for their prayers, Irene Salem and Sue for their overnight vigils at the hospital and Luann & Joe Hernandez for their vigil at bedside as Ray passed into Heaven. Graveside services will be at the Veteran’s National Memorial Cemetery in Cave Creek, AZ on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 9:30am. Memorial mass at 1pm at St. George Roman Catholic Parish, 300 E. 16th Avenue (@ Idaho) in Apache Junction, AZ followed by reception. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Ray’s name to March of Dimes or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
