Richard Warren Buchanan passed away peacefully October 6, 2026,12 days shy of his 95th birthday at Mirabella ASU Tempe, AZ. He was born in Chillicothe, OH on October 18, 1931 to the late Harry and Clara (Cydrus) Buchanan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Joyce (Schrader) Buchanan. Richard is also survived by daughter Terry Buchanan Mesa, AZ, son Mike (Susan) Buchanan Chillicothe, OH, grandsons Jason (Bridget) Buchanan Mesa, AZ and Jeremy (Jodie) Buchanan Fishers, IN, Uncle Hansel (Hank) Cydrus, family friend Carol McCarley, great grandchildren Harper, Jaxon, Anderson, and Brycen, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Julia Booher, Patty Poole and brother Vernon (Bud) Buchanan.

Richard graduated from Unioto High School in 1949 and was drafted into the US Army in 1952. He served his country as a combat medic in the Korean Conflict and was wounded July 4, 1953 in battle on “Pork Chop Hill” and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for his Valor. After discharge he was employed and retired from Dupont in Circleville, OH.

Richard was a devoted Christian husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a steadfast believer in Jesus Christ. He loved his family dearly. It gave him great joy to see Christian family values instilled in his children, his grandsons and their wives, and his four precious great grandchildren. In his younger years he enjoyed making memories camping and fishing with his grandsons and was always ready to take a vacation.

Richard was a founding member of Brookside Church where he served faithfully in several positions until his health no longer permitted him to do so. From board member, bus driver, painter, food pantry worker, or any miscellaneous need he was always willing to serve. He enjoyed various activities with his Brookside friends.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to Carol McCarley and Richard’s VA caregivers both in Chillicothe, OH, and Mesa, AZ, the staff of Legacy House of Mesa, Mirabella ASU, Tempe St. Luke Hospital and Banner Gateway Hospital for their compassion and outstanding care. A graveside service will be held October 19, 2026 at 1:30  in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona where Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Veteran’s Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mountain View Funeral Home.
