How To Care For Cremation Urns

Choosing a cremation urn for your departed loved one takes careful thought and consideration. You want to select something that reflects your feelings or your loved one’s personality. Perhaps you prefer an urn that coordinates with your home decor.

While your urn selection is an important one, so is knowing how to gently care for it throughout the years. Caring for a cremation urn isn’t difficult or time-consuming, however, the appropriate measures will depend upon what kind of urn you’ve chosen. At Mountain View Funeral Home we offer remembrance pieces in a variety of materials, each of which requires a different method to keep them looking their best.

Wood

Keep a wooden cremation urn in optimal shape by following these steps:

  • Routinely remove dust and dirt with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Treat with furniture polish every few months.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking.
  • Avoid using chemicals or water.

These simple steps will keep your wooden cremation urn in good condition for many years to come.

Metal

Placement is important for a metal urn because sun exposure or falls can damage the shape. Keep a metal urn on a stable surface, out of direct sunlight. Use a soft, dry cloth – never damp – to clean a metal cremation urn, as water can cause rust to form.

Glass and Marble

As with most urns, you should keep dust off glass or marble by simply wiping with a dry, soft cotton cloth from time to time. The difference with these materials is that you can use a damp cloth or glass cleaner to shine them. Just be sure to dry the urn completely afterwards, to prevent damage to the container.

Ceramic

There are two main points to remember when caring for a ceramic urn:

  • Place the urn on a sturdy surface high enough to prevent pets or children from knocking it over.
  • Use only a dry cloth to remove dust and dirt; water can damage the surface.
