This year, Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 29, 2017.
Many people mix up Memorial Day with Veterans Day for understandable reasons. They both honor those who have served in the U.S. military. But there is a slight nuance distinguishing one holiday from the other.
The Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs website, “Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.”
Veterans’ Day, on the other hand, is an all-inclusive holiday that honors all veterans, whether living or dead. In addition, it is a day to thank all military members for their service to our nation.
The history of these two days of observance also have different beginnings. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and has its roots in the years after the Civil Way. It did not become an actual federal holiday until 1971.
Veterans Day, on the other hand, began in the days following World War I. Known then as Armistice Day, the significance of the holiday recognizes the treaty signed to end “the war to end all wars”, as World War I was hoped to be.
Mountain View’s Annual Memorial Day Event

We recommend that you wear cool and comfortable clothing including a hat. There will be some tent seating available, but some of it will be reserved for seniors and others who require extra assistance.
